UNILORIN Postgraduate Admission Form in Chemical Engineering – 2016/17

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into the full time and part-time postgraduate programmes in chemical engineering of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) for the 2016/2017 academic session.

UNILORIN POSTGRADUATE CHEMICAL ENGINEERING – AVAILABLE PROGRAMMES.

  1. Ph.D. Degree Programme
  2. M.Phil. /Ph.D. Degree Programme
  3. M.Eng. Degree Programme

UNILORIN POSTGRADUATE  IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING – ELIGIBILITY.

i.  Ph.D. Degree in Chemical Engineering
This is available to holders of M.Eng.; M.Sc.; and M.Tech. degrees in Chemical Engineering, with a minimum of 60% or a Cumulative Grade Point Average score of ≥ 4.00/5.00 in their Master degree programmes.  A Ph.D. degree programme runs for a minimum period of 36 calendar months and a maximum period of 48 calendar months for full-time candidates OR a minimum period of 48 calendar months and a maximum period of 72 calendar months for part-time candidates. Relevant Courses will be taken for the Ph.D. studies where prescribed and a Thesis is required at the end of the Ph.D. programme.
ii. M.Phil /Ph.D. Degree Programme
Candidates who scored between 55.00 and 59.99 percent OR a Cumulative Grade Point Average score of ≥3.50/5.00 and ≤3.99/5.00 can apply for admission into the Master of Philosophy (M.Phil/Ph.D.) degree programme. The M.Phil/Ph.D. degree programme is available only to full-time candidates. It runs for a minimum period of 12 calendar months and a maximum period of 24 calendar months and a dissertation is produced after the research work. Candidates in this category are eligible for conversion to Ph.D. candidature, following a progress assessment report to be made by a Panel of Examiners at the end of the first session of registration. To be eligible for conversion for the Ph.D. program, candidates are expected to score not less than 60% (aggregate) at the end of the first session.
iii. Master of Engineering in Chemical Engineering
M.Eng. degree runs for a minimum period of 18 calendar months and a maximum period of 36 calendar months for full-time candidates. All Master Degree Programmes are by course work. This is in addition to a research report at the end of which a dissertation is produced.

UNILORIN POSTGRADUATE IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING – ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS.

Ph.D. Degree Programme
  1. The Ph.D. programme shall be open only to candidates having M.Phil., or its equivalent in Chemical Engineering, and to candidates that have M.Eng. in Chemical Engineering with a CGPA ≥4.00/5.00 or ≥60 % weighted average from University of Ilorin or any other recognised University.
  2. Candidates for Ph.D programme may be required to satisfy other Departmental requirements during the selection process.
  3. Satisfy all other existing requirements as stipulated in the Regulations of the Postgraduate School.
  4. Credit passes in five (5) Ordinary Level subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry are compulsory.
 M.Phil./Ph.D. Programme
  1. The Phil./Ph.D. programme shall be open to candidates having M.Eng. or equivalent in Chemical Engineering from University of Ilorin or any other recognised University with a CGPA ≥3.50/5.00 and ≤3.99/5.00 OR  ≥55% and  ≤ 59.9% weighted average.
  2. Candidates for the M.Phil./Ph.D. programme may be required to satisfy other Departmental requirements in the selection process.
  3. Candidates for M.Phil/Ph.D. programme will be required to satisfy course work requirements as prescribed by the Department to proceed to Ph.D.
  4. Satisfy all other existing requirements as stipulated in the Regulations of the Postgraduate School.
  5. Credit passes in five (5) Ordinary Level subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry are compulsory.
M. Eng. Degree Programme
  1. The programme shall be open to candidates with a Bachelor of Engineering or its equivalent in Chemical Engineering of University of Ilorin or any other approved university with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division or its
  2. Candidates with Third Class Division and additional PGD certificate with a minimum of upper credit pass (i.e. CGPA of 3.50/5.00) or 60% weighted average in Chemical Engineering may also be considered.     
  3. Candidates may be required to satisfy other Departmental requirements during the selection process.
  4. Credit passes in five (5) Ordinary Level subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry are compulsory.

UNILORIN POSTGRADUATE IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING – DURATION.

i.       Ph.D. Degree Programme
This programme is designed to run on full time for a minimum of thirty-six (36) calendar months and maximum of sixty (60) calendar months. A part time doctoral programme shall run for a minimum of forty-eight (48) calendar months and a maximum of seventy-two (72) calendar months.
ii.      M.Phil /Ph.D. Degree Programme
This programme is designed to run for a minimum period of 12 calendar months and a maximum period of 24 calendar months.
iii.      M.Eng. Degree Programme
M.Eng. degree will run for a minimum period of 18 calendar months and a maximum period of 36 calendar months for full-time candidates.

UNILORIN POSTGRADUATE IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING – GENERAL INFORMATION & HOW TO APPLY.


  • Applicants for the Master degree programmes who are graduates of the University of Ilorin and other recognized Universities, must have a minimum of Second Class Honours Degree (Lower Division) and must be applying for programmes in which they have their first degrees. However, applicants with Second Class Honours Degree (Lower Division) and those with higher classes of degrees seeking admissions into programmes outside those in which they have their first degrees may be admitted, provided they satisfy Senate in a qualifying examination to be conducted. The least class of Degree for all academic programme applicants is Second Class Honours Degree (Lower Division).  Regardless of the institution where the Bachelor’s degree is obtained, ALL candidates shall apply early for their official Bachelor’s degree transcript to be sent to the Secretary Postgraduate School, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria, before the expiration of the stated deadline.
  • Applicants for the Ph.D. degree programme shall have obtained a relevant Master degree of this or other recognized University, with an average weighted score of at least 60%.  Short-listed candidates would be required to satisfy the Postgraduate School in the qualifying interviews and assessments by the relevant Department. Applicants are therefore advised to interact with the Department to which they have applied to ascertain the date of the interview for the Ph.D. degree programme. Regardless of the Institution where the Master’s degree was obtained, ALL candidates must apply early for their official Master degree academic transcripts to be sent to the Postgraduate School, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria, for the purpose of this admission and before the expiration of the stated deadline.  All candidates must have 5 O/L credit passes, including English Language and Mathematics or pass in Mathematics, where applicable.
  • All Higher Degree candidates that attended foreign Universities, where English language is not the medium of instruction, should submit to the Postgraduate School, evidence of their English Language proficiency, e.g., TOEFL or IELTS scores.
  • Applicants for the Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degree Programmes will be subjected to the written assessment (qualifying examination) irrespective of the class of degree obtained, except applicants from the University of Ilorin with a First Class and Second class, Upper Division (Honours).
  • International applicants (Applicants who are domiciled outside Nigeria, and non–Nigerian and applying outside the country) shall be exempted from the qualifying examination. However, International applicants applying from outside the country for the Doctor of Philosophy programmes shall be requested to submit a proposal of not more than 5 pages, giving details of what research they intend to carry out.
